The
Tao and Good Health
The Chinese character of Tao or Dao (seen at above
right and throughout Dr. Chan's website) is often
translated as "The Way of Nature" and
refers to the way and order of the universe. Lao
Tsu—who provided a comprehensive treatment
of the Tao in his work the Tao Te Ching—taught
that the wisest human approach is to not impose
one's will on the universe, and instead align
personal will with the natural harmony and justice
of nature.
The concept of Tao translates to all areas of
human endeavor, including the desire for good
health. Taoism advocates a state of stillness
and receptivity in which our intuition may guide
us toward wise action. Translating this to the
area of health, slowing our breathing and focusing
our mind helps us to "tune in" to our
body's own rhythm and healing process, and assist
our body in that process.
Although
Dr. Chan offers patients conventional (i.e. Western)
remedies when appropriate, he also feels that
working with the human mind, body, and spirit
via natural healing techniques can be very effective
in treating certain illnesses, pains, and recurring
symptoms. He has used such techniques to treat
and manage his own health problems (see Dr.
Chan's Personal Journey to Self-Healing),
and has also witnessed a marked improvement in
many patients using such techniques.
Along with offering tangible health benefits in
the present, such methods can be learned and practiced
by an individual throughout life for improved
relaxation and well-being.
Dr. Chan hopes you will join him for Self-Healing
Classes to learn more about working with your
body's natural healing processes. Techniques discussed
include relaxation, imagery, sensory awareness,
and breathing exercises. You can also contact
Dr. Chan to set up an individual consultation
in which to discuss your health issues or questions.
